Gourmet popcorn is one of the major food trends emerging across the UK. ProperCorn is one of the newest snack brands that is sold in supermarket Tesco in 30g bags at 80p each.
The available flavours include sweet and salty (128 calories), and the flavour I purchased: worcester sauce and sundried tomato. I chose this flavour because the packaging was an enticingly bright bag, the flavours remind me of my favourite meal (cottage pie), and ProperCorn is a highly health-conscious snack.
ProperCorn was born out of a desire for 'better' ingredients. As the tag line reads it's 'popcorn done properly'.
In my eyes standard popcorn is easy to do, and a a simple sweet and salted flavour (which is apparently the traditional way), is very straightforward. ProperCorn, however, isn't a brand concerned with the straightforward. Owner Cassandra's story is printed on the back of the packet and you begin to understand the thought behind such an unusual flavour.
They use butterfly corn, and all natural ingredients to make their special seasoning. Freeze dried herbs and spices are used in special quantities to create the perfect balance of flavours, and I have to say, ProperCorn's worcester sauce and sun-dried tomato flavour is very good.
It's a meaty flavour, if that's even possible with popcorn, but was surprisingly spicier than what I'd expected. The Worcester sauce seasoning is very mild, and because I'm not a fan of spicy food I'm a little bit 'on the fence' about this flavour. I say on the fence, but I finished the packet in about 15 minutes and would probably buy it again. If you like spicy food then you'll love this snack pack. Personally, I'm quite sensitive to heat, so you might not consider this flavour 'hot', but it definitely has a kick to it, which you won't forget in a hurry.
Incredibly low in fat, this particular flavour is the lowest in calories of the range of flavours, and it is still a fibrous snack.
Made in the UK, ProperCorn is a British brand, so if you're UK-based you can enjoy a a healthy snack which has been made on home soil, and that warms my heart.
