The wholegrain purveyors of a more exciting snack, Portlebay have released a new flavour: maple syrup and bacon.

Firstly I'm not keen on bacon and syrup, and I never order pancakes and bacon when I'm dining anywhere because frankly, it's an odd combination that I'd rather avoid. That was until I tried Portlebay's new creation. Credit, where credit is due, the flavour was spot on.

The packaging is just as fun and inviting as the other varieties. I like the funny anecdotes on the front of the packaging too - instead of merely stating what's 'in' the popcorn, they've turned munching on a traditional cinema-style snack into a whimsical past time.

On the back of the packaging you'll find the list of ingredients. I was concerned this particular flavour would be full of additivies and not-so-ntaural nasties, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Portlebay practise what they preach, and I couldn't find anything scary in their ingredient list, plus it's completely gluten free.

The popcorn itself may surprise you; the flavour is an incredible injection of bacon, syrup, a little salt, and a little sugar. The popcorn is coated in their mix of ingredients and the result is crunchy corn which tastes like a mild bacon and syrup bite.

Both my friend and I tried these at the same time, and she was equally curious by the scent (think a mild bacon crisps flavour) and look of the popcorn. It is slightly orange from the paprika, but doesn't stain your fingers.

Funnily enough my friend said the popcorn was like a better version of pringles - once you 'pop', you just can't stop. And she's right, they're a moreish flavour.

Again this Portlebay bag of popcorn is the ideal snack size for one person. My friend and I had a bag each, and weren't 'full' but the popcorn satisfied our peckish appetites.

Another plus point of this flavour, is how suprisingly low in fat and calories it is. I had initially thought a 'crispy bacon and maple syrup' flavour was hardly going to meet my macros, let alone be a treat-wise snack. Thankfully, however, this pack of popcorn is only 119 calories, which I consider an acceptable amount for a health-aware consumer, who likes her indulgent snacks.
