There are a lot of pointless games and apps for iPhones, iPods, and iPads, Mind Snacks' language learning apps are not among them. Currently available in 5 different languages, they make learning languages fun through games and challenges but are actually successful at teaching you a thing or two.
Mind Snacks' French app is good for complete beginners, or people wanting to refresh their knowledge. I started learning French in 7th grade, but I haven't really done much since I graduated in 2006, two of my nieces also use the app and they have never learned French before.
The app has 9 different learning games, but not all are unlocked when you start. As you learn more words and complete more quests you can unlock other games. They start off simple, but get more difficult as you move along.
Each game uses another technique to help you learn words. In swell you have to select the correct word before the time runs out, and in word birds you have to spell words out by selecting letters in the correct order. Other games use picture association, and others require you to rearrange letters.
There are quests to keep you interested, and mini games that become available every now and again. These quests add another challenge. Sometimes it might be to get a specific score in one of the games, but other times it will be to go up several levels in a certain amount of time.
You start off with simple lessons like Numbers 1-10 or Days of the Week. The app also covers conjugating verbs, and common phrases.
You probably won't be fluent after a couple of weeks on Mind Snacks, but it's a great starting point. I've revised a lot of the words and phrases I learnt at school, and my 8-year-old niece learned to count to 10 on the app. Turn out sound and you can also use the app to help with pronunciation.
To see the game in action, check out this video. You can trial the game for free, but to download the full version there is a $4.99 in app purchase.
