In a last minute rush of buying baking supplies I decided to try the Macro Wholefoods Organic Dark Cooking Chocolate.
The package states that the
"Macro Certified Organic range of products are made without the use of synthetic chemicals, pesticides or herbicides- it's the way nature intended."
When it comes to chocolate I am generally more concerned with whether or not it is Fair Trade chocolate, rather than organic. Unfortunately, there is no determination on the packaging as to whether the cocoa is sourced under a Fair Trade arrangement. It is labelled as "Australian Made" from local and imported ingredients.
As far as dark chocolates go, this one is on the mild scale. It contains only 50% Cocoa Solids. It has a smooth, velvety texture but lacks the bittersweet qualities of a really dark chocolate.
The 200 gram block contains 8 servings. Nutritional information is displayed below.
This chocolate melts beautifully and sets nicely, with a rich, glossy sheen. A single block provided enough for two recipes- one required melted chocolate and the other had chocolate chunks baked into brownies.
The 200 gram block was reasonably priced at $2.99, however if given the choice I would be willing to pay more for an organic, Fair Trade chocolate.
The Macro Wholefoods Market brand is a specialty line packaged and sold in Woothworths stores in Australia.
