tip top krummies multi grain breadcrumbs

A product from Tip Top, the Krummies Multigrain Breadcrumbs are the only multigrain breadcrumbs I think I've ever come across. They're made from a range of seeds and grains and the pieces do seem bigger than normal (or perhaps they jut looked that way because it's how I expected them to be).

On the plate, ready to crumb

I used these breadcrumbs to make salmon cakes and was pretty satisfied with the way they turned out: nice and crunchy. However, while the breadcrumbs themselves seem fine, I do have one issue with the packaging of this product: specifically, the easy pour spout. Ironically, it's promoted as a good feature.

I found that the spout successfully set this product apart from others, but not in a good way. While it makes the breadcrumbs easy to pour, it also makes their storage problematic. You can't simply close the box up and put it back in the cupboard, since once it has been opened, the spout doesn't really close properly.

Initially, I thought I might just leave the breadcrumbs in the box and tie it all up in a plastic bag with a bag tie. However, I eventually decided I didn't trust this storage system and transferred the lot into dedicated breadcrumbs tin. The next time I opened tin, ready to make tuna cakes this time (it was perhaps a month later), I got a shock when a moth flew out out me. I don't know when it got in there, but I wasn't impressed.

I guess my verdict is: the product itself is fine, but Tip Top needs to rethink its packaging. There's no point putting a spout on a box if after one use it means the box can't be trusted. I would have thought the plastic bag would work, and I don't know whether the spout had anything to do with the moth, but it highlights that storage is something that needs to e thought through properly.

I don't think I will be buying this product again, although that's partly because I have started making my own breadcrumbs. However, if you have developed an effective storage system and want to give the Krummies Multigrain Breadcrumbs a try, there is one feature of the box you might like: the recipe on the back. Each seems to Have the same one though: Crumbed King Prawns and Calamari with Spicy Relish.

Please, please package them in sealed plastic. Twice I've bought them from a big supermarket with weevils in them. Yuk!
